It was a tough day for book lovers when the Barnes & Noble announced it was closing down. But Amazon is here to save the day. Amazon just announced that they will be opening their 15th bookstore, this time in Bethesda Row.
A Revival of Bookstores
Amazon Books stores are a physical outreach of the website. The stores are stocked with books based on factors from Amazon.com such as sales and customer ratings. The stores also will hold Kindle, Echo, Fire Tablet, and Fire TV devices for sale.
Customers who are members of Amazon Prime receive huge savings on books by paying the online price for them instead of the sticker prices non-members have to pay.
Ginanne Italiano, President and CEO of the Greater Bethesda Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement that she’s “not surprised that Amazon chose to open a location in Bethesda Row, an energetic shopping and dining district that has attracted a number of other hip brands.”
The new bookstore in Bethesda will be located where Urban Country currently is. Urban Country will be moving next doors to where City Sports used to be. A building permit was submitted by Amazon on November 8th for the $1.5 million renovation of the 6000 square foot retail space. The build should be complete by the end of the Summer of 2018.
